Oral Hygiene Basics with Molis Dental
You know when your oral hygiene is working! Your teeth feel fresh, your gums are pink and your breath is clean. If you feel otherwise, it’s time to check up on your practice of oral hygiene for a good measure of health.
Oral Hygiene for Gums
Take a good look at your gums. Give them a test by brushing your teeth. Did your gums bleed or hurt? Are they swollen or seem to be below the natural tooth line?
If your oral hygiene is good, your gums will be pink, not swollen and not bleeding. They will also feel fresh and appear to be tight around each tooth. If you see your gums receding or feel tooth sensitivity at the base of the tooth, it’s time to check with your dentist for potential gum problems.
Oral Hygiene for Teeth
Your teeth should feel strong and have a clean feel when you brush your tongue along the surface of your teeth.
If you experience loosening of the teeth or tooth sensitivity, you may be experiencing the beginning of a serious oral health problem. Loosening teeth or teeth that hurt indicates decay. Decay is an indication that proper oral hygiene is not being practiced on a daily basis and you are a candidate for tooth decay or tooth loss.
Oral Hygiene for Good Health
One of the most important things you can do for your overall health and oral health is to practice daily oral hygiene.
Good oral hygiene practice includes:
- Brushing your teeth thoroughly at least twice daily.
- Flossing properly after each meal.
- Avoiding snacks and beverages that contain sugar or acid.
- Using fluoride dental products, including tooth paste.
- Rinsing your mouth with a mouthwash to wash away any remaining food particles and prevent bacteria.
- Drinking plenty of water to keep your mouth rinsed and fresh.
Visit Your Dentist Twice Annually
It’s a good practice to see your dentist at least two times per year. You can get a thorough check up and cleaning and have the dentist examine your teeth and gums for any changes.
Your health can change at any time and it can immediately affect your oral health. And in the reverse, poor oral health may contribute to other, more serious health problems.
